Class Types

Mixed Age (Birth to Kindergarten)

This is the quintessential Music Together® class, one that a child can attend all the way from birth to Kindergarten, rotating through all nine of our beautifully published song collections along with three special compilations during the summer. This highly engaging class follows the recommendations of child development researchers – that grouping children of a variety of ages fosters natural, family-style learning. Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones; and adults are happy because all the young children in their family can go to class together and richly benefit from the experience. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, or exploring musical instruments. Any caregivers – parents, grandparents, nanny – can bring the children. The whole family is welcome for this important and memorable family music-making experience!

Babies Class (Birth to 8 months)

Every child's development benefits from early exposure to music and movement. Because the early months are so important, Music Together offers two options for babies. Babies 8 months and younger may attend a Mixed Ages Class, whether registered on their own or attending free with an older brother or sister. Babies may also take the special Babies Class offered as a one-time introductory semester to Music Together. This class is specially designed for infants 8 months and younger on the first day of class, along with a parent or caregiver. The music activities and materials are specially designed for parents who want to learn as much as possible about music development in babies and how they can support it within their everyday life as a family. Meet other parents and caregivers of newborns and learn some fascinating music activities you can recreate at home!

Rhythm Kids Level 1 (4-5 year olds)

Rhythm Kids Level 1 is the next musical step for your preschool child (ages 4–5). Parent/caregiver participation is welcome but not required. Feel free to reach out to our center director to discuss your child's readiness to participate independently. Each week we drum, sing, dance, play rhythm instruments, and begin to play music-based games. Rhythm Kids Level 1 guides children toward developmentally appropriate music and movement activities, where they can begin to take charge, lead others, and be musically creative, as they:

  • make up their own drumming patterns

  • invent new ways to play rhythm instruments (shakers, sticks, etc.)

  • create movement ideas for songs

  • even take a drum solo!

Rhythm Kids Level 1 follows through on the Music Together® vision to help children complete the pathway of early childhood music development from birth through age eight. Classes are for preschoolers ages 4–5 and include:

  • 10 weekly, 45-minute classes

  • Animal Collection Songbook and 2 CDs each semester

  • Access to online drum-play videos and other material

Your child will:

  • Explore the world of rhythm through movement, instrument play, and song
  • Develop basic rhythm skills, like keeping beat, improvising, ensemble play, and soloing
  • Learn to create, cooperate, and express themselves musically

A Toca Colorsound djembe drum is included in your tuition for the first semester of Rhythm Kids. This becomes your child's own djembe to play with at home and bring to class each week. If you would like to purchase your own drum instead, please ask your teacher about the special discounts on djembe drums that are available to Music Together families.

Rhythm Kids Level 2 (grades K-2)

Rhythm Kids Level 2 is an exciting music, movement, and drumming class for children in Kindergarten through second grade (ages 5 through 8). Parent participation is welcome but not required. Children integrate and assimilate rhythm into their lives, as they:

  • learn multicultural drumming patterns;
  • develop new repertoire on various percussion instruments;
  • explore movement and dance while singing songs;
  • play games based on music and drumming;
  • have fun with a host of rhythm activities.

Rhythm Kids follows through on the Music Together® vision to help children complete the pathway of early childhood music development from birth through age 8. As part of the Rhythm Kids experience, children and their grownups can enjoy drumming play and practice sessions at home with the help of online play-along videos featuring Rhythm Kids creator Tom Foote. Classes are for children K–2 (ages 5 through 8) and include:

  • 10 weekly, 45-minute classes
  • Animal Collection Songbook and CDs (2 copies) each semester
